Project Dimension

Lenovo and VMware are partnering on Project Dimension, to provide a solution that enables customers to consume compute, storage, and networking at the Edge, much as they do in the public cloud. Project Dimension allows customers to easily order and deploy Edge Infrastructure-as-a-Service as part of their VMware Cloud subscription.

Along with their monthly Cloud service subscription, VMware Cloud (VMC) customers can get enterprise-class hardware physically delivered to any of their edge locations. Each edge location can run an SDDC (software-defined data center) cluster that connects to VMC via VeloCloud SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network). Lenovo will handle the delivery and installation of the Lenovo hardware.

Customers appreciate the simplicity of the cloud, yet many continue to require on-premises infrastructure, especially at the edge. Such infrastructure is for video surveillance, computer vision, analytics, retail transactions, building and facilities control, and other mission-critical functions. Customers need local edge compute and storage for reasons of latency, business continuity, or cost.

Project Dimension combines a resilient edge infrastructure with the simplicity of a cloud-managed service. This solution extends VMware Cloud to deliver SDDC infrastructure to off-site locations. It enables VMware to directly manage that infrastructure to more easily and quickly troubleshoot issues and perform patching and maintenance.

Using the time saved by Project Dimension, a customer can focus on differentiating their business by building innovative applications, rather than wasting precious time on day-to-day infrastructure management.
