Abstract

On March 31, Lenovo announced new servers based on the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processor (formerly codenamed "Broadwell"). This article summarizes what's new with these servers and what documents Lenovo Press updated to support the launch.

System x3650 M5

With the powerful, versatile 2U rack server design, the dual-socket Lenovo System x3650 M5 (E5-2600 v4) server (Machine Type 8871) can run even more workloads, 24 x 7, and gain faster business insights. Here is what's new with the System x3650 M5 with the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family compared to its predecessor:

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 22-core processors (compared to 18 cores) and up to 55 MB cache (compared to 45 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • Up to eight 2.5-inch NVMe PCIe SSDs (two times more NVMe drives).
  • The onboard PCIe slot 5 is a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot.
  • The new Standard OP Panel with 1x USB 2.0 port that can be upgraded (replaced) with the Advanced OP Panel.
  • The front VGA port is optional.
  • Single-rotor system fans.
  • No Simple Swap drive bay configurations.
  • No software RAID support.

With support for Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family and faster, energy-efficient TruDDR4 memory, the System x3550 M5 delivers exceptional performance. Flexible and scalable internal storage configurations include up to 12x 2.5-inch or 4x 3.5-inch drives with a wide selection of drive sizes and types.

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 22-core processors (compared to 18 cores) and up to 55 MB cache (compared to 45 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • The new Entry IO Cage with 1x USB 2.0 port that can be upgraded (replaced) with the Standard or Advanced IO Cage.
  • The front VGA port is optional for models with the Entry IO Cage.
  • No Simple Swap drive bay configurations.
  • No software RAID support.

ThinkServer RD650

The Lenovo® ThinkServer® RD650 is an enterprise class, 2U, two-socket server that features Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v4 product family and supports up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 memory, 22 cores, and 44 threads per socket. With the capability to support mix and match internal hard disk drive (HDD) and solid-state drive (SSD) storage with up to 26x 2.5-inch drive bays, 40 Gbps integrated AnyFabric networking capability, up to six hot-swap dual rotor fans, hot-swap redundant power supplies, and a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet out-of-band management port, the ThinkServer RD650 provides leading features and capabilities.

  • Memory capacity up to 1.5 TB (two-fold increase) with 64 GB DDR4 LRDIMMs.
  • New 12 Gbps SAS PCIe RAID Adapters - RAID 520i and RAID 720i.
  • Standard front and rear VGA ports (DB-15) instead of DisplayPort ports.
  • A serial port is optional.
  • Now supported as an end point with Lenovo XClarity Administrator

ThinkServer RD550

The Lenovo ThinkServer RD550 is an enterprise class, dual-socket server that features Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family and supports up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 memory, 22 cores, and 44 threads per socket. With the capability to support mix and match internal hard disk drive (HDD) and solid-state drive (SSD) storage with up to 12x 2.5-inch front drive bays, up to five I/O slots with up to 140 GbE networking capability, up to 8 hot-swap dual rotor fans, hot-swap redundant power supplies, and a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet out-of-band management port, the ThinkServer RD550 provides leading features and capabilities in a dense 1U rack-mount design.

The Lenovo ThinkServer RD450, now available with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors, is a versatile, 2U, two-socket server that blends outstanding flexibility and expandability. This server is ideal for small-to-medium sized businesses because of its large, cost-effective storage capacity.

Here's what's new with the RD450 with E5 v4 processors compared to the RD450 with E5 v3 processors:

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 14-core processors compared to 12 cores) and up to 35 MB cache (compared to 30 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • New memory options up to a 32 GB RDIMM and a 64 GB LRDIMM option.
  • New drive bay configuration option - 8x 3.5-inch Easy Swap drive bays
  • New 12 Gb NL SAS, 6 Gb NL SAS and 6 Gb NL SATA drive options
  • Support for PCIe RAID adapters (the 12 Gb RAID 520i and RAID 720i adapters) in addition to AnyRAID adapters; support for older 6 Gb PCIe RAID adapters has been dropped.
  • New backplane choices when PCIe RAID adapters are selected
  • With 1-processor configurations, three PCIe slots are now supported (previously only two slots supported)
  • Now supported as an end point with Lenovo XClarity Administrator
  • VGA port on the front of the server for video, replacing the DisplayPort connector.

ThinkServer RD350

The Lenovo ThinkServer RD350, now available with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors, is a 1U two-socket rack server that blends outstanding flexibility and expandability with performance and reliability. It is ideal for customers that require high performance in a space-constrained environment and is an excellent choice for applications such as infrastructure, web server and hosting, departmental virtualization, and line-of-business applications.

ThinkServer RD350

Here's what's new with the RD350 with E5 v4 processors compared to the RD350 with E5 v3 processors:

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 14-core processors compared to 12 cores) and up to 35 MB cache (compared to 30 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • New memory options up to a 32 GB RDIMM and a 64 GB LRDIMM option.
  • New drive bay configuration option - 4x 3.5-inch Easy Swap drive bays
  • New 12 Gb NL SAS, 6 Gb NL SAS and 6 Gb NL SATA drive options

ThinkServer TD350

ThinkServer TD350The Lenovo ThinkServer TD350, now available with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors, is a high-performance dual-socket tower server that enables you to balance high performance and massive storage capacity without the need to invest in a rack infrastructure.

Here's what's new with the TD350 with E5 v4 processors compared to the TD350 with E5 v3 processors:

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 20-core processors compared to 16 cores) and up to 50 MB cache (compared to 30 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • New memory options up to a 32 GB RDIMM and a 64 GB LRDIMM option.
  • Support for PCIe RAID adapters (the 12 Gb RAID 520i and RAID 720i adapters) in addition to AnyRAID adapters.
  • New 5x 3.5-inch hot-swap backplane (for 5-drive configurations that don't need the upgrade path to 15 drives)
  • Now supported as an end point with Lenovo XClarity Administrator

NeXtScale nx360 M5

Lenovo NeXtScale System is an open, flexible, and simple data center solution for users of technical computing, grid deployments, analytics workloads, and large-scale cloud and virtualization infrastructures. The NeXtScale nx360 M5 compute node is a ½U two-socket server and is now based on Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors.

  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • New memory options up to a 32 GB RDIMM option.
  • New models, both for the nx360 M5 server and the n1200 enclosure
  • Updated operating system support

Flex System x240 M5

Flex System x240 M5The Lenovo Flex System x240 M5 Compute Node is a high-performance server that offers enhanced security, efficiency, and reliability features to handle business-critical workloads. The blade server incorporates Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors. The processors feature up to 22 cores each and use new Lenovo TruDDR4 Memory, which runs at speeds up to 2400 MHz.

Here's what's new with the x240 M5 with E5 v4 processors compared to the x240 M5 with E5 v3 processors:

  • Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family with up to 22-core processors (compared to 18 cores) and up to 55 MB cache (compared to 45 MB cache).
  • Memory speed up to 2400 MHz (compared to 2133 MHz).
  • New memory options up to a 32 GB RDIMM option (with a 64 GB LRDIMM option planned).
  • New models, both Standard models and TopSeller models
  • Requires a chassis with CMM2 (support for the original Chassis Management Module CMM1 has been dropped)
  • Updated operating system support

Benchmark Results

Lenovo also announced that the x3650 M5 with E5-2600 v4 processors has set six the world’s number one performance results:

  • World record two-processor server score for virtualized workloads, based on the SPECvirt_sc2013 benchmark
  • Overall world record for server and storage performance per watt for all virtualized workloads, based on the SPECvirt_sc2013_PPW benchmark
  • Overall world record for server performance per watt for all virtualized workloads, based on the SPECvirt_sc2013_ServerPPW benchmark
  • World record for two-processor database and online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads – Based on the TPC-E benchmark
  • Leadership performance in high-throughput workloads such as high-performance computing, based on the SPECfp_rate_base2006 benchmark
  • Leadership performance in high-speed computing workloads such as high-frequency trading, based on the SPECfp_base2006 benchmark

We also announced two additional competitive benchmark results:

  • Two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SAP SD) result on the x3650 M5 server
  • SPECjbb2015 result on the x3550 M5 server
